The Temple Owls escaped Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday with a 28-27 win over Bowling Green in the first of a weekend series between gridiron birds of prey (the Eagles play the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday at the Linc) . The difference was a failed two-point conversion by Bowling Green after they scored on a four-yard catch by Calvin Wiley to make it 28-27 with no time left on the clock. Quarterback Matt Schilz’s pass intended for Penn Wood High School graduate Kamar Jorden was defensed by Marquise Liverpool and the Owls are 5-2 (2-1 in the MAC).
“I thought that was the right decision if I was him,” a victorious Al Golden said referencing Bowling Green head coach Dave Clawson.
“It’s a play we’ve called before and its worked before,” said Clawson, the one-time offensive coordinator at Villanova. “We decided at the five minute mark in the game that if we scored a touchdown we were going to go for two and try to win it. We talked about it [again] before we got the ball back and what the play call was going to be. We felt really good about it. We felt like we had a good play but they had a really good play on it.”
The touchdown by Wiley capped a methodical comeback by Bowling Green which started the fourth quarter down 28-14 after Bernard Pierce scored on a six-yard run with three seconds left in the third quarter. Jordan Hopgood’s one-yard touchdown run capped a Falcons drive that covered 80 yards on 16 plays and used just over nine minutes of the fourth quarter. Along the way they converted on four third downs and – thanks to a penalty against Temple – one fourth down. Temple failed to run much time off the clock with two possessions sandwiched around a Falcons possession that ended at the Owls 33 when they turned it over on downs.
Schilz would need every second of the 1:47 that was left as he got his team in position to win it with a 13-play, 69-yard drive that included a 33 yard pass to Jorden to convert a fourth-and-16 from the Owls 37.
“To be honest [we had] no worries,” said Temple defensive end Adrian Robinson when asked about what the defense was feeling going into the two-point conversion. “You always get a little thought that maybe you might lose but you’ve got to comeback and flip the switch and that’s basically what we did.”
“I didn’t feel helpless,” Pierce said was asked his thoughts as he watched the final play unfold. “I knew my defense was going to come through for me.”
