This Saturday former Eagles All Pro safety Brian Dawkins will receive football’s ultimate honor..he will be inducted into the 2018 Class of Pro Football’s Hall of Fame.
Dawkins was selected in the second round of the 1996 draft and made nine Pro Bowls during his 16-year career 13 in and Eagles uniform. Dawkins is still the only defensive player in league history to record 25 or more interceptions, sacks and forced fumbles.
He was a driving force behind Eagles 2004 NFC Championship season.
Saturday he will be immortalized.
One player Dawkins is often compared to is Eagles Pro Bowl safety Malcolm Jenkins. After a recent training camp practice, Jenkins talked about the player, and man, he admired throughout his youth.
“I think what he’s meat to this city and to this organization is irreplaceable,” Jenkins said. “And he’s still giving back long after his playing years. To me personally he’s always been an example of not only how you play on the field, but his command of the locker room, the amount of respect he has from around the community and the league is something I aspire to be.”
“During the season, he is someone I constantly listen to and bounce ideas off of,” Jenkins continued. “I try to take that and add it to my own game and my life. He is still an ongoing example of someone I look up to.”
When it was announced on Super Bowl weekend that Dawkins had been voted in, the Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie was not at a loss of words to describe one of the best players in the history of the franchise.
“This is tremendous news and I could not be more proud of Brian. Being inducted into the Hall of Fame is an honor he truly earned,” Lurie said in a statement. “He epitomized everything we love about the game of football. His intensity, his passion, his love of the game and his leadership were always dialed in at the highest possible level. He connected in every possible way with the city of Philadelphia and our legion of Eagles fans across the country. We cannot wait to celebrate his special night in Canton this summer.”
Dawkins had a great relationship with Philadelphia fans. He felt his physical style of play mirrored the make up of Eagles Nation.
“They’re crazy,” He once said. “They’re twisted in some ways. But I love them, because there are a lot of parts of me that are twisted in a lot of different ways. That’s why I did some of the crazy stuff on the field that I did. So we fit like hand in glove.”
Dawkins Gold Jacket will also fit very well. *
