HONESTY TO EAGLES FANS IS BEST POLICY FOR FOLES

There is a saying somewhere that speaking the truth will set you free. What they saying most likely is living with a lie will drive you nuts.
Eagles rookie quarterback Nick Foles lived by that saying this week as he prepared for his second start as a pro.
He was as honest this week as you could expect from a quarterback who has thrown just one touchdown pass and three interceptions in his short NFL career
Foles will be asked to lead a team that is riding a six-game losing streak and produce a win on National Television (ESPN, 8:30 PM).
Outside of the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars, the rookie signal caller could not ask for a better opponent to accomplish that.
The Carolina Panthers are 2-8 and have lost two-straight since beating the Washington Redskins on November 4.
Last week the Redskins throttled the Eagles 31-6.
So Foles will have his work cut out for him.
Foles was asked about his honesty and taking responsibility for the lopsided loss to Washington.
“That’s the truth,” Foles said “That is honestly what I felt like the truth is. I’m going to keep it real. When I miss a throw, I know why. I have to make those throws. I can’t turn over the ball and I have to take care of the ball. That’s the quarterback’s job. I play quarterback for a reason, and I love having the ball in my hand. It’s my job to make good decisions, and I didn’t make the best decisions. I made some good ones, but I can’t have all of the bad ones I made.”
Foles was asked about getting the ball to his top receivers, Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson, who had just two catches total between them for five net yards against the Redskins.
“I just have to give them the ball,” Foles said at his locker Friday. “I think it’s just simple. The key to having a great team is you have a great o-line, a great offensive line, it starts with them. Then get the ball into you playmakers’ hands. I have to get them the ball.
“Those guys are playmakers,” said Foles, who had a quarterback rating of 40.5 in his first start. “And it’s my job to get the ball in their hands and give them accurate throws. I didn’t do that. Today’s a new day, and I got back to work and feel good. I’m going to improve and keep working on it. That’s all I can do is keep working.”
Foles was asked if he will be more comfortable this week now that he has a start under his belt.
“I hope, a lot,” Foles said. “There is a lot to learn from that game (against Washington): You can’t have turnovers, I missed some throws that you need to hit, accuracy, and just keeping the rhythm of the game. Hopefully I can take that, learn from it and move forward.”
Foles was asked whether the excitement and adrenaline of his first NFL start got to him.
“No, I don’t think so,” he said. “I don’t think that was the reason. The reason was I messed up. I’m not going to make any excuses. I need to get better. I’m going to learn from it, though. I was able to see what I did fundamentally, maybe decision-making sometimes, and I’m going to improve on it. That is what practice is for. You have 24 hours to deal with the game and then move forward.”
In addition to a patchwork offensive line, Foles will be without the services of one of the premier running backs in NFL.
LeSean McCoy is out because of a concussion he suffered at the end of the Redskins game.
McCoy was the lone starter Foles connected with last week. McCoy caught six passes for 67 yards. Rookie Bryce Brown will be the feature back against Carolina.
The obvious observation is that Foles was throwing to backups in training camp and the preseason as well as practice. Starter Mike Vick worked with the starters in all year.
Backup Riley Cooper was Foles’ favorite wide receiver last week. Cooper had five catches for 61 yards.
Foles has also hit backup Damaris Johnson, also a rookie with some passes. Foles said there is nothing to read into about who he has been throwing to.
“That’s who I decided to based on what I saw,” Foles said. “I am just trying to get the ball to the best receiver possible. Anyone who is on the field, I feel comfortable with. I’m with these guys every day in the locker room and I feel comfortable with them and anybody else on the field. Those guys are great players. I just have to continue to complete more balls, make better decisions and not turnover the ball.”
Foles was asked about Eagles fans, who to say the least are not happy and what kind of reception they will receive.
“I’m just looking forward to going out there and playing in front of our Eagles fans,” Foles said. “I don’t know what to expect. I’m just want to go out there and play the best I can and give everything I have. I know the guys are too. I know that it’s been a tough season for us, and a tough season for them. But it’s not over yet. We have a great game on Monday night versus Carolina. We’re all really excited to play. I can’t wait to get out there and play.
“The fans are passionate, and that’s the one thing I’ve always heard even before I was drafted here. I love it. Shoot, we’re frustrated, too, and we’re going to keep working at it. The fans love this team. They do everything they can to support us. They come to the games and they bleed green. We know that, and I love how passionate the fans are. They live and die with the way their teams play, and that’s hard, and I respect that. We have to keep working hard. The people in Philly are hard working people and do everything we can to keep them coming to our games. Continue to work hard and stay together through the tough times, and go out there and play as hard as we can.”
