Giants defensive end Olivier Vernon is a man of few words. His answers mirror his play on the field and that is he takes a straight line from point “A” to “B.”

That’s it, don’t like it? Too bad.

Vernon was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Even though he did not make a Pro Bowl, Vernon was considered and “A List” free agent after the 2015 season.

Vernon signed a five-year deal with the New York Giants for $85 million with $52.5 million guaranteed.

In his first season with Big Blue, Vernon started all 16 games recording a career-high 63 tackles with 8.5 sacks, earning him second-team All-Pro.

Vernon led a defense that was primary reason the Giants finished 11-5 earning a Wild Card spot in the playoffs.

The Giants face the Dallas Cowboys on tho road to open the 2017 season. It is the NFL’s marquee game of Week 1.

Vernon took some Sunday to talk to the media and as usual he was cordial, professional and to the point.

Veron was asked how he thinks his defense matches up with the Cowboys offense.

“It was a great offense last year, they’ve got a lot of talent on their team offensively, this year – and defensively,” said Vernon who played college football at the University of Miami. “But, it’s a division game, so it’s going to be a good matchup.”

What’s it like opening the season in Dallas on Sunday Night Football?

“I mean, first road game, home-opener for them, we know it’s going to be electric,” Vernon said. “So it’s going to be a big game.”

Vernon was asked if he and his unit were prepared for the Cowboys offense.

“I mean, we’ve seen what they can do last year,” he said. “Right now, we’re lucky that we play them twice a year, so we’re more familiar [with them] than [teams] outside the division. So, like I said, it’s going to be a great matchup. Just can’t wait to play on Sunday.”

Players now do not do much hitting. Vernon was asked if he was looking forward to hit another football team in a real game.

“It’s been pretty much long overdue,” Vernon said. “I think a lot of guys been wanting to hit somebody [and] make it count. And just get back into it – Giant football.”

How good do you think this Giants team can be?

“Like I said, we just take it one week at a team. So, it’s what we put into it.”
