EAGLES OPEN 2013 SEASON WITH A LOT OF FOOTBALL STORIES – AND QUESTIONS
Al Thompson
The Eagles open their 2013 training camp with more questions that month of “Jeopardy.”
• How will the new coach do?
• Who will be the starting quarterback?
• Will those loud, crazy, fast-paced practices really make a difference?
• Will the secondary be effective at any level?
• Will OT Lane Johnson live to the expectations of being the fourth player taken in the draft?
• Will the Birds be relevant in the NFC East?
• Will Chip Kelly play any DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince or any Philly band in his practice music loop this year?
These are questions that Kelly hopes to answer before the Eagles take on the defending NFC East Champion Washington Redskins September 9 on the road on Monday Night Football.
Here are some thoughts on what stories will likely unfold starting July 25th at the NovaCare Center.
OFFENSE: At the top of the list is the quarterback position. On one hand there is Pro Bowler Mike Vick. Vick is injury prone, is a turnover machine, is 33 years old and hasn’t won a playoff game in nine years. But he is the fastest player on the team and at times can be brilliant.
Nick Foles, the rookie who came in to replace Vick last year, is slow of foot and has not learned how to win in the NFL yet. But he has a great arm, is young and played well against Kelly’s Oregon team while he was at Arizona.
Matt Barkley, the USC star who, because of injury, drifted to the fourth round, can do a little bit of everything well and could end up the starter at the end of the season.
Rookie Zach Ertz will push Brent Celek for the starting tight end spot but both players will see plenty of action regardless.
At one time there were 17 offensive linemen on the Eagles roster this spring. Obviously Coach Kelly wants to take a look at a lot of players.
This unit was talented last year but decimated by injuries. Everybody has penciled in (from left to right) Jason Peters, Evan Mathis, Jason Kelce, Todd Herremans and Lane Johnson as the starters. But don’t be surprised if Dennis Kelly or Nate Menkin steals one of the guard spots.
The wide receiver and running back positions are pretty much set with DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin leading the receiving corps and running back LeSean McCoy looking to have a big season. the only questions are with backups Jason Avant, Riley Cooper and Arrelious Benn and how much time they get on the field.
DEFENSE: Talk about turnover…Both cornerback spots with see new starters in former Ravens DB Cary Williams and either Bradley Fletcher or Brandon Boykin at the other spot, all three will see plenty of action.
At safety both spots could have new starters in former Giants standout Kenny Phillips and Patrick Chung, brought over from the Patriots. Last year’s starters Kurt Coleman a Nate Allen are still here and will get a good look from Kelly.
The linebacker position will also have a different look in Kelly’s 3-4 defense. Look for Mychal Kendricks and DeMeco Ryans to man the inside spots while newly acquired outside linebacker Conner Barwin (Houston Texans) and veteran Trenton Cole are on the outside. This is a crossroads year for Cole and former first round pick Brandon Graham.
The defensive line will be bigger and a bit younger with second-year defensive lineman Fletcher Cox, Cedric Thornton and free agent signing Isaac Sopoaga – fresh from a Super Bowl appearance with the 49ers – as likely starters, but rookie Bennie Logan (LSU), trade acquisition Clifton Geathers and Vinny Curry should be regulars in the rotation. This is a big camp for journeyman Antonio Dixon.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Alex Henery has quietly become one of the better place kickers in the NFL after just two seasons.
The former Nebraska standout has hit on 51 of 58 career field goals (87.9 percent) and 71 of 72 extra points with no kicks blocked.
All that is missing is a walk-off field goal and a Pro Bowl. To get that the Eagles must start actually being in games. That could happen this season.
Veteran Donnie Jones will take over punting duties and should stabilize that position.
Listed on the Ourlads Eagles depth chart are Damaris Johnson as punt returner and Boykin as the kick returner.
That will likely change. There is reason to believe Jackson will return as the put returner where he was electric. His spectacular put return against the Giants in 2010 was recently voted as the great single play in NFL history by NFL.com. Why keep that kind of impact play on the sideline?
COACHING: Kelly has surrounded himself with many veteran NFL coaches including his coordinators. That was smart. Eagles legendary coach Dick Vermeil says he plans to attend camp this summer at the NovaCare Center…even better. There are things Kelly will experience over the next few months that only he can learn as he goes along.
In recent interviews with I did with Super Bowl winning coaches Brian Billick and Vermeil for Jersey Man Magazine – both said Kelly is brilliant with the X’s & O’s…both said his biggest challenge will be dealing with the emotions that come with cutting players and managing adult men – some mature and as we all know…some not so mature.
Billick said the Eagles may be the most interesting team to watch in the NFL this year, at least early.
I agree.
