For those who detest the NFL preseason, the Green Bay Packers 24-9 win over the Eagles in the preseason opener for both teams, added plenty of fuel to your fire.

Neither team played well really at all.

The Eagles only highlight on offense was their opening drive when Carson Wentz led the Birds on a 10-play 60-yard drive that was capped by a 38-yard touchdown pass to rookie Mack Hollins.

On the play, Wentz somehow escaped the grasp of Pro Bowl linebacker Clay Matthews, kept his eyes up, and hit Hollins over the middle about 10 yards down field.

Hollins looked like a seasoned veteran, not a kid catching his first NFL pass, as he stiff-armed two would-be defenders, then tip-toed into the end zone.

The Eagles pass protection broke down several times during the first drive but Wentz kept plays alive to keep the drive alive.

Wentz finished his brief appearance going 4 of 4 for 56 yards, no interceptions, and the only TD pass of the game for the Eagles.

The Eagles starting defense was stout against the Aaron Rogers-less Packers forcing a three-and-out and a recovered fumble on their two series.

Eagles first round pick Derek Barnett was impressive in his debut with the defensive end registering two sacks, and four tackles. Linebacker Mychal Kendricks came up with two tackles and an interception.

Pretty much the rest of the game was forgettable for both teams.

Each team fumbled five times. The Bird lost two of them. Rookie running Donnel Pumphey saw a lot of action in the first half with little production. Pumphrey rushed four times for just five yards and caught five passes for just 12 yards.

He had a 38-yard punt return called back after a penalty on linebacker Joe Walker.

The Eagles special teams unit also allowed a 68-yard punt return by Trevor Davis for the Packers first touchdown.

The Eagles starting secondary and key reserves actually weren’t bad with the exception of CJ Smith who was burned on two plays on the Packers scoring drive including a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Janis from Brett Hundley.

Matt McCloin played most the game for the Eagles under center going 28 for 42 for 205 yards and one brutal second quarter interception that set up the Hundley to Janis scoring play.

Asked at halftime to describe his team’s play after two quarters, head coach Doug Pederson said “We played sloppy, too many turnovers.”

The Eagles host the Buffalo Bills Thursday August 17 at the Linc.
