EAGLES ANNOUNCE 2016 SCHEDULE
admin
The Philadelphia Eagles announced their 2016 regular-season schedule. This year’s schedule features four primetime matchups as the Eagles play twice on ESPN’s Monday Night Football, once on NBC’s Sunday Night Football and once in a Thursday night contest that will be broadcast nationally on NBC and NFL Network, and streamed live on Twitter.
The Eagles kick off the 2016 season at home against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, September 11, marking the seventh time that Philadelphia has played Cleveland on opening day. The last time that the Eagles played the Browns was also a Week 1 contest when the two teams opened the 2012 season in Cleveland.
Following the season opener, the Eagles hit the road for a Week 2 Monday Night Football matchup against the Chicago Bears (Monday, September 19).
The Eagles return home to Philadelphia in Week 3 and will host the cross-state Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, September 25, prior to the club’s Week 4 bye.
After the bye, the Eagles will face a five-game stretch that features four away contests, including two sets of back-to-back road games. The first set of away games consists of Week 5 and Week 6 matchups at Detroit (Sunday, October 9) and at Washington (Sunday, October 16). In Week 7, the Eagles will host the Minnesota Vikings for the first time since 2010 (Sunday, October 23), before hitting the road once again to face the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football (Sunday, October 30) in Week 8 and the New York Giants in Week 9 (Sunday, November 6).
In Week 10, Philadelphia will take on the Atlanta Falcons in a 1:00 pm Sunday afternoon contest at Lincoln Financial Field (Sunday, November 13) before embarking on cross-country trip to play the Seattle Seahawks at CenturyLink Field in Week 11 (Sunday, November 20).
Following the trip to Seattle, the Eagles will once again be featured on ESPN’s Monday Night Football when they play host to the Green Bay Packers (Monday, November 28). Philadelphia and Green Bay last met on Monday night in 2006 when the Eagles defeated the Packers 31-9 at Lincoln Financial Field.
The Eagles begin the month of December with a trip to Cincinnati to play the Bengals (Sunday, December 4), marking Philadelphia’s first regular-season game at Paul Brown Stadium since 2008 and just the fifth time in franchise history that the club has played a regular-season game in Cincinnati.
The final quarter of the season begins with a Week 14 home contest against the Washington Redskins (Sunday, December 11), marking the first of the Eagles’ three divisional home games. Following the game against Washington, Philadelphia will travel to Baltimore for just the third time in franchise history and take on the Ravens in the final road contest of the season (Sunday, December 18).
In Week 16, Philadelphia will face the New York Giants at Lincoln Financial Field on Thursday Night Football (Thursday, December 22). As a part of the NFL’s new expanded Thursday Night Football package, the NFC East rivalry game will be broadcast nationally on NBC and NFL Network, and will also be streamed live on Twitter.
The Eagles will close out the regular season with a home contest against the Dallas Cowboys (Sunday, January 1), marking the first time since 2011 that Philadelphia has finished the regular season at home.
Other scheduling notes:
Saving the Best for Last: For the first time in franchise history, Philadelphia will host all three of its NFC East rivals in the final four weeks of the season. The Eagles will square off at Lincoln Financial Field against Washington in Week 14, the Giants in Week 16 and Dallas in Week 17.
Steeling Wins: Dating back to 1966 the Eagles are a perfect 8-0 at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Philadelphia last hosted the Steelers in 2008, a 15-6 victory in which Eagles QB Donovan McNabb completed his first 15 passing attempts – marking the most consecutive completions to start a game in franchise history – and the defense recorded nine total sacks, including eight takedowns of Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger.
8 is Great: Including the aforementioned 8-0 run against the Steelers at home, Philadelphia has put together impressive home records against two of its other 2016 home opponents. Including postseason, the Eagles have won eight of the last 10 home games against both the Minnesota Vikings and the Atlanta Falcons, who they will host in Week 7 and Week 10, respectively.
Got the Time?: Thanks to an away schedule that includes road contests at Baltimore, Cincinnati Detroit, and local NFC East foes the New York Giants and Washington Redskins, the Eagles will leave the Eastern Time Zone just three times over the course of the season. The Birds will play in the Central Time Zone twice (Week 2 at Chicago and Week 8 at Dallas) and in the Pacific Time Zone once (Week 11 at Seattle).
Monday Night Madness: For the third-straight season, the Eagles will be featured in two Monday Night Football matchups on ESPN. The Eagles kick off their primetime slate with a Week 2 contest at Chicago and make a second Monday night appearance in Week 12 when they host the Green Bay Packers.
Low Mileage: The Eagles face a friendly travel schedule for the second straight year and will travel just 11,272 miles to and from opponents’ cities over the course of the season, per travelmath.com. Although a Week 11 cross-country flight to Seattle serves as an outlier to skew the numbers (4,758 miles round trip), the other seven away games total just 6,514 miles. Last season, the Eagles traveled 6,820 miles with the longest trip being a Week 9 contest at Dallas (2,634 miles).
As has been the case since 2007, the Philadelphia Eagles will be offsetting the carbon footprint of all its travel mileage through a tree-planting program. The team’s carbon footprint, which also includes all bus and train transportation to and from airports, stadiums and hotels, will be offset in partnership with the Conservation Fund’s Go-Zero Program. More than 5,850 trees have been planted so far, offsetting 6,515 short tons of CO2e (5,900 tons) which is the equivalent of removing 1,127 passenger vehicles from the road for one year, according to the EPA.

Flexible scheduling: “Flexible scheduling” will be used in Weeks 10-15 and 17. Additionally, in Weeks 5-9, flexible scheduling may be used in no more than two weeks. In Weeks 5-15, the schedule lists the games tentatively set for Sunday Night Football on NBC. Only Sunday afternoon games are eligible to be moved to Sunday night, in which case the tentatively scheduled Sunday night game would be moved to an afternoon start time. Flexible scheduling will not be applied to games airing on Thursday, Saturday or Monday nights. A flexible scheduling move would be announced at least 12 days before the game. For Week 17, the Sunday night game will be announced no later than six days prior to January 1. The schedule does not list a Sunday night game in Week 17, but an afternoon game with playoff implications will be moved to that time slot. Flexible scheduling ensures quality matchups in all Sunday time slots in those weeks and gives “surprise” teams a chance to play their way into prime time.
