It is hard imagine why people would criticize a football team that is 2-0, and whose offense is ranked No. 1 in total offense and in scoring after week two of the season.

But such is the case for the Eagles and head coach Chip Kelly.

The expectations of the Birds offense are very high and when you see the three receivers who played in the Eagles exciting come-from-behind 30-27 win over the Indianapolis Colts were targeted 18 times and caught just six passes, the questions are going to be asked.

What’s wrong?

At his weekly press conference wide receiver Jeremy Maclin was asked exactly that.

“I just think it was just one of those days where that is just where it was going,” said Jeremy Maclin, who caught four passes for 45 yards and a touchdown, but was targeted 11 times. “We had opportunities on the outside, I know I did and we just didn’t hit. We’re going to try and get that fixed.”

Darren Sproles, listed as a running back, was outstanding, catching all seven passes that came his way for 152 yards.

Tight end Zack Ertz was also terrific, catching four passes of six passes for 86 yards.

But veteran receiver Riley Cooper caught just one of three passes for eight yards. Cooper dropped what appeared to be a touchdown pass in the first half. Cooper did draw a pass interference penalty that set the Birds up at the goal line and the opportunity to score a touchdown.

Rookie receiver Jordan Matthew caught one of four passes thrown his way for 17 yards.

To be fair quarterback Nick Foles was not at his best, some of the passes were off target, and some were dropped. The running backs and tight ends did not seem to have as much trouble as the receivers last Sunday.

“We’ll continue to look at it,” Maclin said. “We’re still number one in the league in offense. So if we get that part fixed, it can be something special.” Me and Nick will continue to work on that.”

Maclin said he is feeling better than ever on the field and will continue to get better…and faster.

“I felt the fast I’ve felt in a long time,” Maclin said. “Even on film…I look pretty fast. I run every route like I am supposed to . I’m not a big guy on taking pass plays off. I just don’t believe in that. (Last Sunday) we just didn’t connect. ”

Maclin was asked what it will be like to see former teammate DeSean Jackson in another uniform on Sunday.  Jackson was released after last season despite posting career statistics. There are still questions swirling as to why the Eagles dumped Jackson.

“It will be strange,” Maclin said. “We played together for five years. It will be strange, but people have to understand that it’s the Eagles versus the Redskins, not DeSean versus the Eagles or against Jeremy or anything else.”

The Redskins come to town (1 P.M. FOX) with a hot quarterback in Kurk Cousins who last week was 22 of 33 for 250 yards and two touchdowns and a QB rating of 109.4, No. 2 in the NFC. Cousins will start Sunday against Eagles in place of Robert Griffin III who is out with a foot injury he sustained last week early in the game against Jacksonville, a 41-10 victory for Washington.

The Redskins defense has impact players including pass rusher Ryan Kerrigan.

Since entering NFL in 2011, Kerrigan is one of just two players in the NFL with 25-plus sacks (28.5) & two-plus INT-TDs (2). In past four meetings witht he Eagles, Kerrigan has four sacks, three forced fumble and a fumble recover.

Also linebacker Brian Orakpo had 3.5 sacks in past three meetings against the Birds had 1.5 sacks in his last game against the Eagles. Cornerback DeAngelo Hall is second among active players with 43 interceptions.

Chip Kelly was asked about the Redskins defense and his concerns during his press weekly conference.

“I think their front is, and you’ve got two outstanding linebackers in Orakpo and Kerrigan,” Kelly said. “They added [DE] Jason Hatcher, who I have a ton of respect for, played really well against us the last two times we played Dallas last year and now he’s in that front. They are also very big across the front. They have two really good linebackers in Keenan Robinson and Perry Riley. They have two real good inside guys so that front seven is very, very formidable.”

On defense the Eagles may be without one of their defensive players in Mychal Kendricks. Kelly addressed questions about the status of Kendricks and who will line up in his place if he cannot go on Sunday. Kelly said Thursday Kendricks is “very doubtful.”

“For today and we will see,” Kelly said. “He’s out today and we’ll see and I’m not putting anything on him. We’ll see what he can do tomorrow and Saturday and we’ll make a decision what’s the best for him overall.”

And who is going to be in instead of Mychal today?

“They are rotating [LB] Emmanuel] Acho and [LB] Casey [Matthews] in there.”

Many thing without RGIII, the Redskins are vulnerable. That remains to be seen.
