EAGLES FACE ADJUSTMENTS AFTER LOSS AND LOSS OF PLAYERS

admin

Kevin Kolb is sacked in loss to Packers. The Eagles starting QB suffered a concussion in the first half and did not return.

The Eagles can only hope they bottomed out on Sunday.

It was not so bad losing to the highly-rated Green Bay Packers, 27-20.

The Birds, led by quarterback Mike Vick, staged a spirited comeback only to fall just short.

What was of real concern were the injuries during the game to quarterback Kevin Kolb, linebacker Stewart Bradley, center Jamaal Jackson and fullback Leonard Weaver –all starters –two of those injuries, Jackson (triceps) and Weaver (knee), will likely end their seasons.

The Eagles website threw out scenarios for these guys…Do they promote A.Q. Shipley from the practice squad? Do they bring in Kevin Mawae? The Pro Bowl snapper announced his retirement last week but would add a veteran presence to a very young squad should he decide to come to the Eagles to back up Mike McGlynn, who played well after Jackson went down.

At fullback, the website informed that head coach Andy Reid indicated he was working out Jason Davis (formerly of the Eagles, Bears, Raiders and Jets) and Owen Schmitt (Seattle). The Eagles don’t have a true fullback on their practice squad to promote.

Bradley and Kolb – both suffered concussions – are probably week-to-week.

What this does is possibly hurt the fragile confidence a young team is trying to hold on to.The positive is the Eagles did stage a comeback and just ran out of time.

Vick showed the quickness and talent that got him into three Pro Bowls. He is also working his way back into a positive light with many fans.

Vick’s 31-yard dash to the Packers’ two-yard line in the third quarter that set up the first touchdown was a reminder of how great he can be.

But regardless of how well he played, Reid made it clear that the job is Kolb’s the minute he is ready.

“I don’t want to slight Michael Vick one bit because I’m very proud of the things that he did in there,” Reid said. “He did a heck of a job and he did a lot of it with his feet. He had over one hundred yards rushing the football and he was able to get away from some of the pressure and make things happen. I think Michael will tell you that he would like to have a couple throws back, too, but I have no problem with what he did. He’s come a long way from where he was when he first got here. But again, Kevin’s the guy.”

Vick finished with a quarterback rating of 101.9, Kolb 56.2 before he left the game at halftime.

The longer Vick plays and the better he performs will stir fan reaction, especially of Kolb continues to struggle.

The Packers seemed to be able to move the ball up the middle after Steward left the game in the second quarter.

The injury occurred after Stewart was hit in the head by a teammate’s leg. Stewart tried to get to his feet but stumbled awkwardly and fell to the ground.

Packers center Scott Wells, who was near Bradley on the field when it happened, said it is no picnic to get your bell rung like that. He said he knew first hand.

“Unfortunately I have been on the receiving end of a couple of concussions,” Wells said. “So I know the symptoms and the signs. It’s tough…it is definitely weird. In this business you are expected to be able to get up and go on and that is what it looks like he was trying to do. Concussions are a tricky thing. It’s unfortunate for it to happen to anybody. As far as it being an opponent, we move on and say ‘ok, he’s out now his substitute is coming in. We have to be ready to make the adjustment.”

It remains to be seen if the adjustments the Eagles make over the nest few weeks send the season in the right direction.
