SMYRNA WINS DELAWARE DIVISION 1 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP OVER SALESIANUM IN OVERTIME

Smyrna high school is celebrating a state championship.
The Eagles are also the Footballstories Team of the Year.
Smyrna won the Delaware Division 1 State Title beating Salesianum, 32-26 in overtime on December 5 at the University of Delaware.
Tied 26-26 at the end of regulation, the Eagles got the football first. Will Knight scored on fourth and goal from the oneyard line. The twopoint conversion attempt was no good.
The Sallies had a chance to win it with a touchdown and an extra point. But on fourth and goal from the one, Colby Reeder was stuffed by the Eagles Eli Hutchinson ending the game.
Smyrna becomes the first Henlopen Conference football team to win the Delaware Division 1 State Championship since 2008, when Caesar Rodney beat Sussex Central for the title.
Head coach Michael Judy talks about his team’s efforts this season.
“Having the opportunity to compete against a powerhouse like Salesianum in the State Finals is an experience these young men will never forget,” Judy said. “This team, forged under the great leadership of seniors like Jeff Campbell, overcame much adversity throughout the season by staying together as a close-knit football family and working relentlessly toward their goals. Every rep of every drill was approached as if it was their last and the great effort and energy they brought allowed us to persevere in the championship game.”
