EAGLES MUST CONTAIN BREES AND GRAHAM TO HAVE SUCCESS AGAINST SAINTS

The general feeling is that when the Eagles take on the New Orleans Saints at Lincoln Financial Field Saturday night (8:09 p.m. NBC) the Eagles will score points.
Questions are out there about how the Birds intend to keep Saints quarterback Drew Brees and the Saints receivers in the building including the incomparable tight end Jimmy Graham.
Brees is considered a master at making defenses pay for trying to put pressure on him.
At his weekly press conference Eagles Defensive Coordinator Bill Davis was asked about Brees and his phenomenal numbers against the blitz. How difficult is it? Is he in the Peyton Manning category when it comes to trying to send extra rushers?
“Absolutely,” Davis said. “Drew Brees has excellent numbers, Blitz, no blitz, coverage, non-coverage. I know he’s one of the best rated blitz quarterbacks there is so you bring up a good point. This offense is so efficient, and it is run on Drew Brees and his decision making and quick release, and he really makes you defend the field both horizontally and vertically because all five of his eligible receivers are up and active like a lot of the younger quarterbacks cannot pull that off and a lot of the older quarterbacks can’t but he’s been in the system and been with Sean [Payton] for a while and they just really stretch you, again, both vertically and horizontally.”
Davis talked about Graham and the problems he poses on offense.
“He’s the No. 1 target they have and he’s been their most consistent target,” Davis said. “He’s a big, athletic tight end, catches everything thrown near him. They move him all over the place so it’s tough to practice and get a beat on how to help guys on him.
“He is the No. 1 target but one of the attributes of all great offenses and like this one, this ball goes to everybody. It goes to the open man, and Drew Brees does a great job of doing that quickly.”
The Saints clinched a playoff berth with a 42-17 win over Tampa Bay in Week 17. Brees, selected once again to the Pro Bowl, threw for 381 yards and four touchdowns in the win and surpassed the 5,000-yard mark (5,162) for the fourth time in his career. Graham finished the season with 86 catches for 1,215 yards and 16 touchdowns, becoming the first tight end in NFL history to record at least 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns in two different seasons.
“We are good enough to do whatever we set out to do,” says Brees about the team’s playoff chances. “We took a great step in the right direction with this game to get ready for this playoff run.”
Davis was asked about when you have a quarterback that gets rid of the ball quickly, like Brees does, how much of a difference does it make in terms of coverage, do you man up on a guy – how much of a dilemma is that for your coverage?
“I think the key is to change up that type of coverage and it’s more about the quarterback than the actual coverage and what he’s looking at and what he sees and how quick he can read it,” Davis said. “He’s seen every coverage and he’s seen all kinds of different tactics, and then so has Sean and they have got adjustments to everything. I think constantly kind of shifting it on them is the best way to go about it.”
Playing a win-and-in game for the NFC East title in Week 17, the Eagles defeated Dallas 24-22 to clinch the division. Pro Bowl running back LeSean McCoy won the rushing title (1,607 yards) and quarterback Nick Foles was the passing leader (119.2 passer rating).
Wide receiver DeSean Jackson had 1,332 receiving yards this season and the Eagles became the first team ever to have a quarterback with a 100+ rating, a 1,500-yard rusher and a 1,300-yard receiver.
“It’s a great feeling,” says Jackson about returning to the playoffs. “Our fans are going to go wild. It’s a great opportunity to bring the playoffs to Philadelphia on Saturday. We just need to have a great week of practice and get ready for a good team coming in here.”
