PLAYOFFS, ARENABOWL ARE ONLY THING ON THE SOUL’S RADAR

Over the next few weeks the Soul (14-3) will be looking to land a spot in the ArenaBowl for the third time in the last four years.

Getting there would be great, hosting it ideal.

The Soul’s chances to host this year’s ArenaBowl actually got a little better after last weekend when the San Jose SaberCats knocked off the Arizona Rattlers.

The Rattlers now have four losses. In the playoffs, it the Rattles come back and beat the SaberCats in the playoffs and the Soul win the American Conference – as expected – the Wells Fargo Center would be the host of the Arena Football League title game.

The Soul knocked themselves out the race for the No. 1 seed when they lost to the Jacksonville Sharks on the road 74-67 giving them their third loss of the season.

The SaberCats have lost just once, interestingly enough to the lowly LA KISS, one of the few AFL teams that will not make the playoffs.

The Soul came back and crushed the New Orleans VooDoo last week 61-28 at the Wells Fargo Center, the Soul’s last home regular season game raising their overall record to 14-3.

Defensive back Dwayne Hollis, who along with fellow back James Romain, teamed up to cause much havoc for the VooDoo passing game.

New Orlean’s Adam Kennedy completed just 14-of-30 passes for 120 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Romain and Hollis each came up with an interception.

“We were a little upset with the way we performed our last time on the field, so we had a chip on our shoulder,” said Hollis, referring to the loss to the Sharks. “We came out and we had to set the tone.”
Hollis said he and his teammates just followed the direction of their coaches.

“Our coaches came out with a great game plan,” Hollis said. “We did what they told us to do and we happen to be there to make plays, that’s our job.”

Hollis said he was asked if he was thinking about the possibility of playing the ArenaBowl in Philadelphia.

“Not really,” Hollis said. “We’ve got to take care of what we can take care of and then whatever happens, happens. We just have to play well and play who is on the schedule.”

Fullback Tommy Taggart, who had four touchdowns against the VooDoo, said having every game in Philadelphia, including the title game is important.

“Of course,” Taggart said. “us having home field advantage in the playoffs means everything to us. To not have to be in the road, to be here in front of our fans is exactly what we want. If the ArenaBowl could be here it would be fantastic. But for us to do that we have to keep winning games. We have one more (regular season) to make sure we win, and whatever plays out in the West we’ll deal with it when it comes.”

Hollis and Taggart agree on one thing for sure. There is no title game unless the Soul keep winning.

“We just want to keep it going,” Hollis said. “It’s good to have momentum going into the playoffs. We just want to keep playing hard.”
