Villanova, PA – The most important statistic in the game between the University of Maine and Villanova on Saturday afternoon at Villanova Stadium might have been the number on punts. The Wildcats punted three times; the Black Bears just twice and they won the game 37-35. Welcome to the new world of football, it doesn’t matter how many yards your defense gives up but how many stops it can get – it’s basketball on turf.
The quarterback play from the reigning CAA co-Offensive Players of the Week (Villanova’s John Robertson and Maine’s Marcus Wasilewski) was outstanding. Robertson ran for 214 yards and four touchdowns while throwing for 121 additional yards and one touchdown. Wasilewski was 28-of-34 passing for 337 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, he had 86 yards and a touchdown.
The Black Bears scored on their first six possessions of the game, the only positive that Villanova could take way is that three of those scores were field goals. The Wildcats scored touchdowns on four of their last five possessions. The only time they didn’t was on an interception thrown by Robertson in the final minute of the game in desperation mode.
