BONEHEADED SOMETIMES BUT JACKSON IS BECOMING THE REAL DEAL

DeSean Jackson is emerging as a major star for the Eagles.

DeSean Jackson is quickly emerging as a legitimate star in the NFL. His touchdowns and big catches are coming faster that is common sense some feel.

Someday he may have his own bloopers DVD but if he keeps producing the way he has so far during his young career, his teammates, coaches and fans will laugh all the way to the Super Bowl with him.

His first trip to the end zone on Monday Night Football against the Dallas Cowboys in his first game with the Eagles was almost a disaster when Jackson, after hauling in a spectacular catch at the beginning of the game triumphantly flipped the ball away as he ran into the end zone.

Unfortunately, Jackson flipped the ball before he actually crossed the goal line.

Luck and some poor officiating gave the Eagles a second chance at the goal line and Brian Westbrook punched the ball in for six on the next play.

Against Carolina this year, again in the opener on the road, Jackson’s end zone celebration of Brent Celek’s second-quarter touchdown drew a 15-yard unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty.

“Celek gave the ball to Jamaal [Jackson] and he spiked it,” Jackson said. “It hit me. I fell. It wasn’t planned. Whatever it is, it is.”

Whatever it was it could have been worse, just like the Dallas game.

Last weekend against the hapless Kansas City Chiefs, Jackson scored on a brilliant throw and catch from Kevin Kolb. Jackson dashed past three defenders for a 64-yard touchdown.

Jackson, who was nursing a sore groin all week causing him to miss two practices, did a full flip in the air as he crossed the goal line and landed with a not-so-perfect but still impressive split.

Did the groin-stretching landing bother head coach Andy Reid? Apparently not.

“It looked like his groin was pretty good,” Reid said at his post game press conference with a smile. “That’s what I took out of it.”

The second year speedster from the University of California would finish with six catches for 149 yards leading the Birds to a 34-14 win.

Celek was asked if he thought of doing a flip and split after his 35-yard touchdown.

“Nah, I’m not as athletic as DeSean,” the tight end said, his eyes wide open at the thought.

Jackson’s groin was of some concern to his teammates, coaches and of course the fans. All wanted to get rid of the memories of the Saints debacle as quickly as possible.

Jackson said the Eagles trainers did their job so he could do his.

“I am feeling pretty good right now,” Jackson said at his locker after the game. “I was able to get a little shot before the game and make some of that pain go away. So the pain wasn’t a factor today. I was able to go out there and produce like I needed to. And that was the only way I was going to be able to play. I felt there was no point in me playing if I am not capable of doing the things I am capable of doing as a receiver.”

Jackson is so fast and explosive; he almost appears to have been shot out of cannon the instant his hands touch the football. He was asked if that is natural or learned.

“It is basically instinct,” Jackson said.

And the end zone celebration? Was that wise given his tender upper leg?

“The shot worked pretty good,” Jackson laughed. “I might be addicted to that shot. But honestly, I was able to get the shot and it took a lot of the pain away. I was able to play the way I usually do.”

Jackson was asked if he plans his celebrations.

“Honestly I don’t,” Jackson said, still not able to lose the grin. “It’s just one of those things when you’re out there and doing whatever comes to your mind…you just do it. Very creative but…I know I can’t do any boneheaded plays like last year…but it just shows how energetic I am…sometimes its boneheaded plays but I am definitely playing the game with a lot of passion and having fun. I am never going to take that away from my game.”

The Eagles hope he never does either.
